Rama 9 is the area around the junction of Rama IX Road and Ratchadaphisek Road, spread across Din Daeng and Huai Khwang districts. It takes its name from Rama IX Road, which opened in 1978 and is named after King Bhumibol. The MRT station here is called Phra Ram 9.
Since the MRT opened in 2004, the area has grown into one of Bangkok's main business districts. Central Rama 9 opened in 2011, followed by The Ninth Towers, the new Stock Exchange of Thailand building and G Tower.
Rama 9 is modern and centred on work. Office towers, malls and condo buildings stand close together around the junction, and Central Rama 9 connects to MRT Phra Ram 9 by an underground walkway.
The district is still growing. In March 2026 Central Pattana announced Central GR9, a 73-rai district joining Central Rama 9, G Tower, R House and The Ninth Towers. The first phase is due to reopen in stages from early 2028, with housing planned for later phases.
Away from the junction, along Rama IX Road and around Huai Khwang, the streets are more local, with markets, shophouses and long-running restaurants.
Many residents work in the district's offices, from the Stock Exchange of Thailand to the towers around Central Rama 9.
Central Rama 9 covers most daily needs in one building, with a Tops supermarket, a Central department store, a cinema and a wide choice of restaurants. Fortune Town across the road has a Lotus's supermarket and floors of electronics shops.
One stop north, Esplanade is built for going out, with a 12-screen cinema, the Ratchadalai Theatre for musicals and a bowling alley. A short walk further north, The Street Ratchada is open around the clock, with a 24-hour Foodland supermarket and a 24-hour gym.
After dark, the evening markets fill up. Jodd Fairs Ratchada and the Train Night Market Ratchada, behind Esplanade, draw crowds for street food every night. Further north, Huai Khwang Market runs along Pracha Rat Bamphen Road into the early hours, with the Ganesha shrine at the Huai Khwang junction at its mouth.
The Thailand Cultural Centre, home of the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, gives the MRT station its name and hosts concerts and touring shows. Royal City Avenue (RCA), one of Bangkok's main nightlife streets, runs between Rama IX Road and New Phetchaburi Road.
Runners head to the MRTA Health Park on Rama IX Road, a shaded loop of about 950 metres around two ponds, open mornings and evenings.
KIS International School on Pracha Uthit Road teaches the IB from age 2 to 18, with Regent's, SISB and the Lycée Français nearby. Central International School on Rama 9 Soi 7 takes children from eight months to age 12. Piyavate Hospital and Praram 9 Hospital are both on Rama IX Road.
The MRT Blue Line runs through the area, with Phra Ram 9, Thailand Cultural Centre and Huai Khwang stations. Sukhumvit, where the MRT meets the BTS at Asok, is two stops south.
The MRT Orange Line is under construction, with trial service planned for late 2027 and full service in 2028. It will connect with the Blue Line at Thailand Cultural Centre and run east towards Min Buri, with stations at MRTA and Wat Phra Ram 9.
Rama IX Road runs east towards Srinakarin, Ratchadaphisek Road is the inner ring road, and the Si Rat Expressway runs beside Rama IX Road.
Most of the housing in Rama 9 is modern high-rise, much of it built since the MRT arrived. Recent projects include Ideo Rama 9 - Asoke, Nue District R9 and Landmark @MRTA Station, with more under construction, such as COBE Ratchada - Rama 9 and NUE Epic Asok-Rama9.
Many buildings are within easy reach of an MRT station, with modern one- and two-bedroom units widely available.
Prices depend on a building's age, its distance from the MRT and the developer's segment. Most projects are mid-market with compact units, alongside a smaller number of higher-end towers near the junction.
