Silom is the area around Silom Road, which runs from the Sala Daeng junction on Rama IV Road south-west to Charoen Krung Road near the river, in Bang Rak district. Si Lom means "windmill" in Thai, after one that once stood here.
The road dates from the reign of King Mongkut in the mid-1800s, built alongside a canal. A tram ran along it from 1925 until 1963, when the canal was filled in. Over the following decades Silom became Thailand's main banking street, home to the headquarters of Bangkok Bank and to the Dusit Thani, the city's first high-rise hotel.
What's it like living in Silom
Office towers and banks line Silom Road, and on weekdays the streets are full of people heading to work, lunch and the train.
The two ends of the road feel different. The eastern end, near Lumphini Park, has the office towers, hotels and the new Dusit Central Park. The western end, towards Charoen Krung, has older shophouses, the Indian and Muslim communities, and quieter side streets.
Convent Road, between Silom and Sathorn, is one of the leafier streets in the district, home to BNH Hospital, Christ Church and Saint Joseph Convent School.
Just across Rama IV Road at the eastern end is Lumphini Park. Laid out in the 1920s, it is the oldest public park in Bangkok, with a lake, open lawns and a raised walkway, the Green Bridge, that links it to Benjakitti Park.
Eating, drinking & daily life
Thai street food sits beside Japanese restaurants on Soi Thaniya, Indian and Muslim kitchens near the river end, and long-running Chinese restaurants throughout.
Central Park Bangkok opened in September 2025 on the corner of Silom and Rama IV, facing Lumphini Park. Silom Complex at Sala Daeng has a Central department store and a Tops supermarket, and Silom Edge across the junction has more than 15 shops open 24 hours. The Commons Saladaeng is a short walk away.
Villa Market off Soi 5 and a 24-hour Foodland on Patpong 2 handle the groceries. Lalai Sap market on Soi 5 serves office workers on weekdays, and the Soi 20 morning market sells fresh food and breakfast from about 6am.
Towards the river, Charoen Krung, Bangkok's first paved road, is lined with old shophouses, galleries and design studios. Silom is also home to the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, Bangkok's main Hindu temple, and every April the road closes for Songkran, one of the city's biggest celebrations.
BNH Hospital and Bangkok Christian Hospital are both in the area, and King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital is close by on Rama IV. Long-established Thai schools with English programmes include Saint Joseph Convent, a girls' school on Convent Road, and two boys' schools running Grades 1 to 12: Assumption College and Bangkok Christian College. The British Club, off Silom Soi 18, has a pool, tennis and squash courts for members.
Getting around
BTS Sala Daeng on the Silom Line and MRT Si Lom on the Blue Line meet at the top of Silom Road, linked by a covered walkway. Further along, Chong Nonsi, Surasak and Saphan Taksin stations serve the streets towards the river.
From Saphan Taksin, boats run along the Chao Phraya River. Chong Nonsi also connects to the Bangkok BRT, which runs south along Narathiwas Road towards Rama 3.
Rama IV Road, Narathiwas Road, Surawong Road and Charoen Krung Road connect Silom with the rest of the city.
