- Positioned at the end of Sukhumvit Soi 55, offering quick access across central Bangkok.
- A wide choice of condos, from large high-rise projects to small boutique buildings on the side sois.
- Popular with professionals, couples and long-term residents who want to walk to food, shops and the train.
Thonglor is Sukhumvit Soi 55, a long residential street running north from Sukhumvit Road to New Phetchaburi Road. The name comes from Thonglo Khamhiran, a naval officer who owned land here.
For decades it was a quiet street of houses, shophouses and car dealerships. As Bangkok's Japanese community grew along this stretch of Sukhumvit, restaurants, bars and new condos followed. Today Thonglor is one of the city's best-known residential addresses.
Most homes, shops and restaurants are on the numbered side sois that run off both sides of the street, with BTS Thong Lo at the southern end.
What's it like living in Thonglor
Off the main road, Thonglor is green and residential. Walled houses and big trees stand between condo towers, and the side sois are lined with restaurants, cafes and small shops.
The Commons on Soi 17 works as the neighbourhood's meeting place: people bring a laptop in the morning, meet friends without booking and take their children there at the weekend.
The lower part of the street, near the BTS, is the busiest, with shops, offices and the train on the doorstep. Further up, towards Phetchaburi Road, Thonglor becomes quieter and more residential.
Residents are a mix of Thai families, the Japanese community, long-term foreign residents and young professionals who work in central Bangkok.
Eating, drinking & daily life
Food is what Thonglor is best known for. Sushi counters, izakaya, cocktail bars, cafes and long-running noodle shops share the same few streets, and many of the best-known places are on the side sois rather than the main road.
The Commons, an open-air community mall, is stepped over four levels: a ground-floor market of independent food and drink counters, then small shops, a children's floor and a grassed roof deck.
Seenspace on Soi 13 adds restaurants, cafes and bars around a courtyard. Market Place Thonglor on Soi 15, relaunched in March 2026, is the practical stop for errands, with a Villa Market supermarket, Boots, a bank, clinics, fitness studios and more than 45 food and retail brands. Many people do both in one trip: errands at Market Place, then coffee at The Commons.
Foodland on Soi 55 covers everyday groceries. Donki Mall, home to Thailand's first Don Don Donki, is a short ride away on Sukhumvit 63.
Camillian Hospital has served the upper part of Soi 55 since 1960, and Samitivej Sukhumvit, with its dedicated children's hospital, is nearby on Soi 49. Wells International School runs an early years campus on Soi 51, from nursery to Grade 2. Benjasiri Park, with its lake, pool and sports courts, is one stop west at Phrom Phong.
Getting around
BTS Thong Lo (E06) sits at the bottom of Soi 55, putting the neighborhood directly on the Sukhumvit Line. Phrom Phong and Ekkamai are just one stop away, while Asok, with its MRT Blue Line connection, is two stops west.
For residents near the entrance of the soi, the station is easily walkable. Further up Thong Lo, motorbike taxis are part of everyday life and make getting around the neighborhood quick and convenient.
By road, Sukhumvit runs along the southern end of the area, while New Phetchaburi Road to the north provides access to Bangkok's expressway network.
Condos & pricing in Thonglor
Thonglor has one of Bangkok's widest mixes of condos, from established high-rises to newer luxury developments and smaller residential buildings.
Projects such as Park Origin Thonglor add a large-scale high-rise option, while newer developments including Origin Thonglor World are still taking shape. At the upper end of the market, SCOPE Thonglor and Nivati Thonglor 23 target buyers looking for a more exclusive residential experience, while ultra-luxury Porsche Design Tower Bangkok is currently under construction.
Older buildings are also found throughout the area, often with larger unit sizes than newer projects. Buyers can choose between being close to BTS Thong Lo near the entrance of the soi or living further up Thonglor in a quieter residential setting.
Prices vary significantly depending on a building's age, location, design and unit size. Newer luxury projects sit at the upper end of the market, while older buildings can offer more space for the price.
